Domain Classification by Google
Special StrategiesDomain Classification by Google is the process of assigning a domain to a topical category, influencing which queries the site can rank for and how its authority is assessed. Google analyzes content, inbound links, user signals, and Site Focus Score to classify domains—for example, as 'law,' 'health,' or 'technology.'
A domain classified as 'law' will rank more easily for legal queries but struggle with culinary queries—this is why Site Focus Score is so important. Topically scattered domains (low Focus Score, high Radius) may not receive classification in any category, losing authority potential. Domain classification connects to Topical Authority: the higher the authority in a given category, the stronger the classification and easier the ranking.
For example, kancelaria.pl with 200 legal articles → strong 'law' classification → easy ranking for new legal queries. In practice, check Google Search Console to see what query categories you rank for—if they're scattered, it's a signal that your domain isn't well classified.
